Dress For Success On The Golf Course

Nothing beats spending time out in the sun playing golf with some of your closest friends. Steeped in tradition, golf is a unique sport that has certain rules that must be followed by everyone who plays. These rules often include the types of clothing that you can wear on the golf course. If you are new to the game of golf, it can be a challenge to know which styles of clothing are acceptable. Below are some helpful tips that can make it easier to know what to wear each time your visit a new golf course.

Check With The Facility Beforehand

Each golf course has its set of rules regarding what type of clothing is and isn’t appropriate. The best way to know for sure what you should wear is to contact the facility directly to ask about their clothing guidelines. This can help ensure that you don’t wind up making a fashion faux pas on the golf course.

Choose A Shirt With A Collar

Traditionally, the game of golf has always been associated with collared shirts. Whether you choose a button down or a polo shirt, by opting for a shirt with a collar, you improve your chances of looking like you fit in. Just make sure that whatever shirt you choose has enough give to it that you can swing your arms freely without the shirt limiting your movements. Also, keep the weather report in the back of your mind and choose a short or long sleeved shirt depending on which is most appropriate for the weather. For women, you may even be able to get by wearing a sleeveless shirt if it is supposed to be hot out. Just be sure to check with the course before you get dressed for the day.

Typically, most golf clothing leans toward classic styles. That means that you should choose khaki pants or shorts over more casual clothing such as jeans. Likewise, you need to be aware of what is and isn’t appropriate in terms of length of your shorts. Shorts that are too short are not a good choice. At the same time, though, shorts that are too long also look out of place. If you want to fit in, try choosing knee-length Bermuda shorts instead. Golf skirts are also an option for women during the hot summer months.

Avoid Overheating

When the weather is hot, it is important to wear clothing that is designed to help keep you cool. This means for breathable fabrics that are designed to allow air to flow through them to keep you from overheating. Today’s golf clothing also sometimes incorporates special features such as wicking fabric that is designed to move sweat away from your body so that you stay dry and comfortable regardless of how hot it gets outside.

Avoid Bulky Clothing

Chances are there will be times when you have to play in poor weather and have to put on a jacket to stay dry or warm. Look for a close-fitting jacket that doesn’t add a lot of bulk to your frame. Clothing that is too large or that impedes your movements can make it harder to play.
