Callaway Golf started out in 1983, after Ely Callaway sold his vineyard for $9 million. He bought half of the company named Hickory Stick USA and started producing new lines of golfing products including Callaway Golf shoes and steel series. The new company, Callaway Hickory Stick USA, moved the operations to California and used new technologies to produce better golf-clubs in 1985 (since the company wasn’t selling well compared to other companies). After a few years, the company sales took off with a $4.8 million profit, followed by the Ely Callaway’s full ownership of the company.
In 1989, Callaway Golf produced another product, the S2H2 Stainless Steel Woods, reaching $10.4 million in sales. By 1991, the company sales reached $54.8 million with its one of the most popular products until today – the Big Bertha. Mark Brooks used it to win his third PGA Tour, the Greater Milwaukee Open.
The popularization of Callaway Golf shoes came years later, backed up with endorsements from professional golfers including Annika Sorenstam, a 10-time LPGA Champion.
